Taran is the main male protagonist of The Black Cauldron.

Taran is a young daydreaming teenager who at first takes care of animals in the farm of wizard Dallben. To save his pig Hen Wen, he ends up discovering the Horned King's castle with a curious creature named Gurgi. There, he meets the sweet princess Eilonwy and the bard Fflewddur Fflam, who help him defeat the devilish Horned King. Taran dreams of being a hero, but to perform a heroic act he would know the true meaning of the friendship.
